Last week we discussed the many times Jesus interacted with his disciples – post (temporary) mortem. This week we’ll learn a little more about Jesus’ reaction to their unbelief and the commands he left with them.
Are the disciples up for the task? Are they given all of the tools they need to accomplish the high expectations set for them? And what about now? The disciples and apostles that were present, who were empowered and in charge, are long since gone; are we now leaderless and powerless?
In a time where the physical face of Jesus was a poignant memory, people still struggled with unbelief. Now all we seemingly have are words, written two thousand years ago; which in addition to telling us the account of the Christ, they also actively charge us with duties like repentance, faith, and evangelism.
Are we held to a standard like the apostles? Are we expected to believe with unwavering faith that a man named Jesus lived, was buried, and raised again – all based on a written account from over two millennia ago? Or is something more powerful going on than just ink on a page?

36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate before them.
44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” (ESV)

Jesus and Thomas
24 Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (ESV)
