“Lord, I know I should evangelize. But the good that I want to do, I do not do.” “God, I know I should not steal. But the evil thing I don’t wish to do, I find myself doing.” This is not the picture of a happy Christian existence. But Paul said abut the same thing, didn’t he? Or did he?

(ESV) contains some reflections by Paul that are often misunderstood. Many seek to use Paul as an example of our human foibles even after we become Christians. After all, one might surmise, if the great apostle was subject to such grave shortcomings, the Lord certainly cannot expect much more from us.
If taken to an extreme, this passage could become the ultimate excuse for why we failed in our Christian existence. Actually, it does not even sound like Paul. In other passages he speaks of his dogged determinism, his great desire to succeed, and even his source of power to succeed. In another place he goes so far to say, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”1
Was Paul able to do what he wanted, or was he not? What would make the difference? Or, did Paul vacillate with feelings of inability one day, and confidence the next?
This article contends that Paul was able to refrain from doing evil. Also, he was empowered with the ability to accomplish what he wanted. The difference lies in what Paul was under the law, before he became a Christian, and what he became after his conversion.

In immersion we were raised to walk in newness of life.2 Paul speaks of a person’s pre-Christian existence as spiritual death.3 Where once he was dead in his sins, now he is alive, united with Christ. For this reason he should no longer sin because he died to those sins. Now he is alive to serve Christ. Once he was useless, but now he is profitable.

(ESV) . Paul illustrates the Christian’s changed relationship in terms of a change in masters. The old master was impurity and lawlessness resulting in further lawlessness. The new master is righteousness resulting in sanctification (v. 19). One cannot please God when sin is master. Yet when we changed masters, we received the power through the Holy Spirit to live a life that is pleasing to God.
The third contrast is an illustration from family relationships, i.e. marriage (Romans 7:1-6closeRomans 7:1-6 Released from the Law 7:1 Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress. Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code. The passage instructs us concerning the jurisdiction under which we live. The married woman has an obligation to her husband as long as he lives. Yet if he dies, she is freed from that obligation. Also, if she joins herself to another while her husband lives she will be called an adulteress.
If a person is not under grace he is under the law, and bound to it. However, if he dies to the law then he is no longer under its jurisdiction. By like token, Christians are no longer under the jurisdiction of the law, but under Christ’s jurisdiction. This is not to say, however, that the law was bad. Paul goes to great lengths to show just the opposite, namely the value of the law.4
These contrasts vividly show the hopelessness of life outside of Christ. They illustrate the futility of human merit as grounds for salvation. Paul is here contemplating the fact that, try as he might, while under the law he could never please God. He either came up short, missing the mark; or he transgressed God’s law. Either way he despairs because he recognizes that he was not pleasing to God.
This passage would be one of the most dismal in all the Bible if it were speaking of the Christian’s present experience. But would Paul speak of his life as being wretched, miserable, and self-defeating? This is not our normal picture of the great apostle. But as Paul had occasion for reflection about his former life it would be just the correct conclusion to draw.
He saw how his life under the law could never quite be successful. Just the opposite, however, was true. It was doomed to failure. Paul laments that under the law he was dead, enslaved to sin, and unable to please God. His efforts, however well-intentioned, would never be sufficient. This led him to the awful conclusion of what life outside of Christ is: “Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death.5

OBJECTIONS – One might object to the idea that Paul is referring to his pre-Christian experience on the grounds that he is using the present tense, i.e. what he is now. But it is possible that he is using the “historical present.”

For the sake of vividness or dramatic effect a writer sometimes imagines that he and/or his readers are present and are witnessing a past event. He narrates the past event as though it were actually taking place.6

Another objection to the proposition that Paul speaks of his earlier life under Judaism is the recognition of the fact that people do sin after becoming Christians. This fact must, unfortunately, be admitted. Yet this may not be the passage to use in support of this truth. Scripture states that our goal as Christians is to be sinless. Paul pressed on toward it.7 John wrote that one of his purposes in writing his first epistle was “that you may not sin” (1 John 2:1close1 John 2:1 Christ Our Advocate 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. Our duty is to strive to be what we can be with God’s help, not bemoan our shortcomings with a defeatist attitude. Granted, there is stumbling along the way. Repent and confess the sin. Resolve in your heart to sin no more. Christians ought to persevere with the attitude that they will defeat sin once and for all in their life, not let sin defeat them.

Who will deliver me from this body of death? (ESV) , there is no joy to be found, no satisfying life in Christ to be had. Here is only a sad recognition that man left by himself will not succeed. Paul does not end his thoughts there. He turns from the despair of life outside of Christ to the joy Christians experience because of what Christ has done for them.
He offers his thanks to God through Jesus. The next section will show what he can be under “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.”9 Where once he was pleasing to no one, now he is pleasing to God, the Spirit bearing witness that he is a child of God.10
In summary, Paul demonstrates from his own life that apart from Christ a man cannot be pleasing to God, no matter how hard he tries, or how good his intentions may be. The context itself shows several contrasts between what we were, and what we are now.
Our goal as God’s people is to be pleasing to Him. Only through Christ is this possible. We now have the ability, through the Holy Spirit, to conquer sin in our lives.
